My son is about to be 20 months old and is still not saying any real words. A lot of “momma” and “dada” and a ton of babbling and noises but no words.

Is this something I should be concerned about? Is it too early to get speech therapy intervention?

Any tips/experiences/advice would be greatly appreciated!

@Bluebonnet generally by 2 years of age toddlers should be saying about 50 words, starting to put two words together and about 50% of their language should be understandable to others. I think if you have any concerns they best thing is to discuss it with your pediatrician and ask for a referral to speech therapy. Sometimes they will also refer you for a hearing screen to make sure there are no issues there. Some kids just need a little more time but better to start sooner if you are concerned!

Mine all of a sudden exploded. I feel like they were a little "later" to the talking game but once they started they literally did not stop. Agree with asking your pedi as they might be able to tell you if there are any additional signs of needing extra intervention.

I am a speech therapist who used to work in early intervention. Currently, I am just being a mom. However, it is always BEST to get in early and get checked!!!! Age 2 and only 2 words is considered delayed and worth getting a referral and get things moving! Sometimes just educating parents on increasing opportunities to talk makes a world of difference! For example, start putting something the child loves- like bubbles high on the counter and make the child try to imitate you saying, "bubbles". If the child makes any approximation like "buh" or "buh-buh" immediately praise and blow the bubbles for him/her and repeat. Hope that helps a little and hope your kiddo gets talking soon!
